Concert Review & Pre-party

Steve Gunn & Friends

Huset. November 4th, 2016

As promised the evening started with gourmet hot dogs from Løgimose, including
homemade ketchup, mustard, soft onoins, Meyer´s buns and remoulade with Karl
Johan mushrooms. Snake lived up to his
reputation as the hot-dog-eating champion of Roskilde – putting away a
suprising number of hot dogs….Respect!

Snake, Lick and Dr. Rock played a variety of tracks from Brooklyn as the
the tasty hot dogs were washed down with ice-cold Brooklyn ale. Once our appetite
for gourmet junk-food and beer were satisfied we hopped in Lick´s family wagon
and shortly after arrived in the smoky atmosphere of Huset, accompanied by a
variety of Hipsters and people like usJ

The evening started with a one-man-band ”Only Wolf” – a self-proclaimed
hippy sporting a colorful psychedlic cat t-shirt accompanied by green nylon
hiking pants…he´s from CanadaJ This character plays
alone, with self-produced background tracks
embodying a soft yet strong base line instumental. Only Wolf plays live electric
guitar riffs over the tracks while singing a trance-like vocal tying the the
music together into a modern psychedelic melodies. Only Wolf probably will
never make it to the top of the charts or make a solid living off his music as
he offered me after the concert that I could download all of his music for free
– a true HippyJ

After a short break Nathan Bowles took the stage sitting on a stool with
his banjo positioned in a ”Deliverance ” like posture. This sympathetic artist,
resembling a bit Meatloaf, played a handful of acoutical banjo numbers…I
wouldnt say it was the highlight of the evening but it is always enjoyable to
hear the clear and twangy clang of a well-played banjo…Well done Nathan!

Shortly after a break and Nathan removed his thick, wool sweater, reappearing
as Steve Gunn´s drummer. Steve Gunn is cool! Period. and plays a very unique blend of modern rock.
His latest album ”Eyes On The Lines” is harmonic rock with references to
Television (Credit: Snake Comment) and with traces of Jonathan Wilson though
without the overly strong 70´s reference. In other words an alternative
Americana with a spice of Brooklyn.

Steve has produced over 10 albums but his latest work has attracted more
attention and praise than his earlier work. So Steve is a seasoned, dedicated
musician who´s masterful guitar abilities become very evident when standing a
single meter from him as he plays the shifting chords of ”Ancient Jules” and ”Night
Wander”. Steve Gunn´s voice has a subdued, soft, yet characteric vocal which is
spread over the instumental music like a thick layer of frosting on birthday
cake.

Personally there was not a clear favorite for me, but it was actually the
entire show which melted together as a whole as one satisfying musical
experience.

The concert as a whole was atmospheric, cool, with a feel-good vibe
accompanied by a good beer buzz and good company. Steve Gunns music is the type
that is best understood and appreciated live where one experiences his abilites
and feel the energy of the tasty tracks strenghtened by his masterful guitar
abilities.
